Project Akshaypatra

Motto: Annadanam Param Danam (The Gift of Food is the Greatest of All Gifts)

What the Project is About

Project Akshaypatra is a hunger alleviation initiative by Prayan Foundation, focused on reducing food wastage and ensuring food reaches those who need it the most. Centered around Delhi University’s North Campus, the project collects excess food from PGs, hostels, and student messes and redistributes it to underprivileged communities, especially children and families living in nearby slum areas.

Inspired by the mythological vessel that never ran out of food, Project Akshaypatra aspires to create a modern-day equivalent—where kindness, responsibility, and resourcefulness come together to ensure that no food goes to waste, and no person goes hungry.

Aims and Objectives

  • Bridge the gap between food waste and food need: Channel surplus food toward those experiencing hunger and malnutrition.

  • Ensure access to nutritious meals: Provide safe, healthy, and balanced meals to underserved communities.

  • Promote food security and reduce hunger: Actively combat urban hunger through consistent and organized food distribution.

  • Encourage sustainable and chemical-free food practices: Advocate for responsible consumption, organic eating, and minimal food wastage.

Our Achievements So Far

  • Collected and Distributed Leftover Food: Established a regular system of collecting surplus food from local PGs and delivering it to nearby slums.

  • Organized Food Distribution Drives: Conducted community feeding programs during key seasons, festive times, and crisis situations.

  • Nutritional Support: Alongside cooked meals, we’ve offered fruits, protein-rich supplements, and clean drinking water to improve nutritional outcomes.

Our Future Plans

  • Expand Operations: Widen our food collection network to include more areas across Delhi-NCR and partner with restaurants, caterers, and community kitchens.

  • Raise Awareness: Conduct campaigns and workshops in schools, colleges, and communities to build awareness about food waste and responsible consumption.

  • Nutrition-Focused Drives: Organize events focused on child nutrition, anemia prevention, and food safety.

  • Promote Sustainable Agriculture: Support eco-friendly farming practices by collaborating with local farmers and promoting the use of chemical-free produce.

Project Akshaypatra is a symbol of compassion in action. It goes beyond just filling stomachs—it uplifts lives, restores dignity, and builds a stronger, more caring society. At Prayan Foundation, we believe that the true measure of prosperity is not in abundance, but in the ability to share it with those in need.
