Raktima: Empowering Women Through Hygiene & Awarenes

Every woman deserves dignity, comfort, and access to safe menstrual hygiene. Project Raktima, an initiative by Prayan Foundation, is committed to bridging the gap in menstrual health awareness and access. Its core motto is “Women’s hygiene and empowerment through awareness”.

How Raktima Works — The Process

  •

    1. Needs Assessment & Awareness Campaigns
The initiative begins by identifying communities (especially urban slums, rural areas, or underserved localities) where menstrual hygiene is poorly understood or unaffordable. Through awareness drives—street plays, workshops, pamphlets—the project educates people (especially girls and women) about menstruation, hygiene, myths, and safe practices. Instagram+1

    2. Sanitary Pad Distribution
Once awareness is built, Raktima arranges for the distribution of sanitary pads to women and girls who cannot easily access or afford them. This ensures immediate relief and improves health outcomes. prayanfoundation.in

    3. Empowerment & Follow-Up
Along with distribution, the project holds interactive sessions, encourages local women to become “hygiene ambassadors,” and keeps track of changes in behavior or uptake. To sustain the impact, the foundation may periodically revisit the area, replenish supplies, or integrate the community into longer-term health/hygiene education programs.

Goals of Raktima

    • Raise awareness about menstrual hygiene, dispelling taboos and myths

    • Provide access to sanitary products for women/girls in underserved areas

    • Promote empowerment via education so women make informed choices

    • Ensure health & dignity, reducing infections or complications due to poor menstrual management

  •

What Was Done in the Drive

  • In communities where Raktima was deployed, sanitary pads were distributed to numerous women and girls. prayanfoundation.in
  • Awareness sessions and workshops were conducted to teach proper usage, disposal, and hygiene practices.
  • Volunteers engaged in dialogues and myth-busting activities to reduce stigma around menstruation.
  • The reach and impact were highlighted in social media and community posts (e.g., stepping into the heart of Delhi’s slums to create conversations)

Suggestions for Future Initiatives & Improvement

  • Local Production & Microenterprises: Enable women in the community to produce low-cost sanitary pads locally, thus generating income and making pads more accessible.

  • Sustainability Model: Introduce subsidized pad distribution over time, so the community eventually supports itself.

  • School Programs: Partner with schools to introduce menstrual hygiene lessons, provide pads in school restrooms, and coordinate with health departments.

  • Men & Community Involvement: Engage boys, men, community elders in awareness to reduce stigma and build a supportive environment.

  • Safe Disposal Infrastructure: Set up disposal bins and educate about sanitary pad disposal methods (e.g. incinerators, pit burial) to reduce environmental impact.

  • Monitoring & Feedback: Use periodic surveys/feedback to check behavioral changes, gather success stories, and track health outcomes.
